Woman pleads guilty to assaulting trooper in Brookings County

A Sisseton woman has pleaded guilty to assaulting a South Dakota State Highway Trooper during a traffic stop in Brookings County.

It happened the evening of June 28th on Interstate 29 near Brookings.

A vehicle driven by 24-year-old Stevie Shepherd was pulled over for suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

During the stop, Shepherd become combative and assaulted the female trooper, even pulling out some of the trooper’s hair. Her injuries were not serious.

Shepherd also pleaded guilty to driving under the influence. A charge of ingesting a controlled substance was dropped.

States Attorney Dan Nelson says Shepherd was also on parole at the time on previous charges and she has been jailed since the incident.

Shepherd will be sentenced on August 13th. Simple assault against a law enforcement officer is a Class six felony punishable by up to two years in prison and a $4000 fine.
