West Nile detections increase in South Dakota

South Dakota’s first human case of West Nile virus for the season was reported June 23rd in Sanborn County.

Now, cases have been confirmed in mosquito pools in Brown, Beadle, and Minnehaha Counties.

State officials urge the public to take simple steps to protect themselves and their families against the virus.

The virus is most commonly spread through mosquito bites.

You can reduce your risk to West Nile by using mosquito repellents, limiting time outdoors from dusk to midnight, wearing long pants and sleeves and removing areas of standing water.
