Two teenagers apprehended in Saturday’s mobile home fire in Brookings

Two teenage males were identified and have admitted starting several fires, including the one that led to a mobile home fire in the 100 block of Second Street South in Brookings.

Due to the suspect’s ages, names will not be released. Charges are pending in juvenile court for reckless burning.

Shortly before 3:00 o’clock Saturday afternoon, the Brookings Fire Department and Brookings Police were dispatched to the 100 block of Second Street South.

A shed next to a mobile home was on fire. The fire spread to the home, causing significant damage. Due to the wind and extreme heat, several surrounding residences received heat damage to the outside of the structures. The estimated damage is approximately $40,000.

During the investigation several other spots were identified in the area where small grass fires had been started.

On Sunday, residents in the area contacted law enforcement about some juveniles possibly playing with a lighter in the area. That led to the apprehension of the two teens.
