Two motorcycle riders participating in Saturday’s Disabled American Veterans Poker Run are injured in an accident southeast of Aurora.

It happened about 12:45 p.m. on Highway 324 near 479th Avenue.

Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring says 63-year-old Patrick Allen Patenode of Clark was heading east when he lost control of his motorcycle while transitioning from asphalt to asphalt with fresh oil. The motorcycle was laid on its side and the driver fell in the eastbound lane of traffic.

A cycle driven by 51-year-old Thomas Michael Owen of Spearfish was also traveling east and swerved to miss Patenode. When Owen swerved, he tipped his motorcycle over.

Patenode was taken to the Brookings Hospital Emergency Room by Brookings Ambulance with unknown injuries and later airlifted to Avera Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Owen was transported to the Brookings Hospital Emergency Room by the Elkton Ambulance with unknown injuries.

Neither rider was wearing a helmet.
