A Texas man is sentenced for crimes that began with a stolen pickup in Brookings and involved the destruction of an ATM in Madison.

Twenty-five-year-old Alton Himes of Houston was sentenced to 19 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay nearly$100,000 in restitution. He earlier pleaded guilty to Bank Larceny.

In the early morning hours of December 2, 2021, Himes and three co-defendants used a pickup stolen from a parking lot on the SDSU campus in the ATM theft.

They used tow straps to destroy an ATM at Dakotaland Federal Credit Union in Madison and remove three cash boxes.

The three then traveled across state lines with the stolen cash. The ATM cost $30,000 to replace. The total amount of cash stolen was $32,300.

Himes’s co-defendants are awaiting sentencing.
