Suspicious fire causes extensive damage, Brookings police say juveniles may be to blame

Brookings police are investigating a suspicious structure fire they believe was started by juveniles.

Shortly before 3:00 o’clock Saturday afternoon, the Brookings Fire Department and Brookings Police were dispatched to the 100 block of Second Street South.

A shed next to a mobile home was on fire. The fire spread to the home, causing significant damage. Due to the wind and extreme heat, several surrounding residences received heat damage to the outside of the structures. The estimated damage is approximately $40,000.

The fire is believed to have started outside the shed under suspicious circumstances. During the investigation several other spots were identified in the area where small grass fires had been started.

On Sunday, residents in the area contacted law enforcement about some juveniles possibly playing with a lighter. The juveniles fled before officers arrived.

Suspects have been identified and the investigation continues.
