Monkeypox Case in South Dakota

The State Health department is reporting the first case of “monkeypox” in a South Dakota resident.

State officials say a male in his 30’s from eastern South Dakota has tested positive for the virus which causes monkeypox. The positive report comes from officials at the State Public Health Laboratory; the specimen is now being forwarded to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for confirmation.

Monkeypox spreads when a person comes into contact with a rash, scabs, or body fluids from an infected individual. The South Dakota Department of Health encourages individuals to contact their healthcare provider early if they develop symptoms.
