Monkeypox Case in South Dakota

The State Health department is reporting the first case of “monkeypox” in a South Dakota resident.

State officials say a male in his 30’s from eastern South Dakota has tested positive for the virus which causes monkeypox. The positive report comes from officials at the State Public Health Laboratory; the specimen is now being forwarded to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for confirmation.

Monkeypox spreads when a person comes into contact with a rash, scabs, or body fluids from an infected individual. The South Dakota Department of Health encourages individuals to contact their healthcare provider early if they develop symptoms. More information is posted at the State Department of Health website https://doh.sd.gov/diseases/infectious/diseasefacts/monkeypox.aspx.
