A 56-year-old man died Friday afternoon in a single vehicle crash in Moody County.

His name has not been released pending notification of family.

According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the man was driving an SUV north on Interstate 29 when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle left the road and went into the center median where it crashed before coming to a stop in the Big Sioux River. It happened seven miles south of Brookings.

Law enforcement and bystanders on-scene pulled the driver from the vehicle to a nearby sand bar, where EMTs declared the driver deceased.
