Lake Preston man arrested after high-speed chase in Brookings County

A Lake Preston man is in custody after a high-speed chase early this morning in Brookings County.

Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring says it began shortly after 3:30 a.m. when a deputy attempted to stop a pickup going 61 miles an hour in a 35 mph zone on Hwy 14 in Volga.

The suspect vehicle it fled north on 464th Ave and continued north with speeds topping 100 mph.

The pursuit ended when the suspect went into the ditch at the intersection of 196th St. and 464th Ave.

Thirty-two-year-old Casey Lee Verhey from Lake Preston, SD was taken into custody and charged with DUI 2nd, eluding law enforcement, reckless driving, speeding, lane violations, and 2 stop sign violations.

The University Police Dept., Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office, and Brookings Police Dept. assisted with the pursuit.
