Investigation continues into stabbing death of Brookings man

The investigation continues into a rural Brookings stabbing incident that resulted in the death of a man.

Brookings County Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring says it was reported as a fight and stabbing at about 5:12 p.m. Saturday on the 4200 block of Western Avenue South.

The victim, identified as 37-year-old Justin Proctor of Brookings, had a single stab wound to the lower abdomen. He was taken by ambulance to the Brookings hospital then air lifted to a Sioux Falls hospital where he died several hours later.

The other party involved in the fight, a 15-year-old male, had fled the scene. A short time later, he turned himself in at the Brookings County Sheriffs Office. He was interviewed by law enforcement, examined at the Brookings Hospital for injuries sustained in the fight, and then released. He is not deemed a threat to the public.

An autopsy on Proctor was conducted Monday.

The juvenile’s name is not being released.

The State’s Attorney’s Office will make the decision as to whether charges will be filed. Further investigation will be conducted by the Sheriff’s Office and the South Dakota DCI.
