Several departments responded to a grass fire Sunday afternoon north of Elkton on 207th Street near 486th Avenue.

Crews from The Elkton, Aurora, Brookings and White fire departments battled the blaze.

Brookings County Assistant Sheriff says the call came in shortly before 4:00 pm for a controlled burn that had gotten out of control.

Sebring says a resident had been burning trash several hours prior and had believed the fire was out before they left the area. When he returned, he discovered the fire
had reignited and spread into a nearby grass field. It consumed about 100 acres. Damage is estimated at about $3,000.

County Residents are reminded to practice good fire safety. There is a requirement to notify Dispatch prior to any open burning.

Windy and extremely dry conditions mean an increased fire danger in Brookings County and fires can easily spread.
