Former Rapid City priest accused of stealing $250,000 in donations

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) – A former priest accused of stealing cash donations from the Diocese of Rapid City has been indicted on new tax crime charges.

The new indictment filed this week accuses Marcin Garbacz of stealing a total of $250,000 in church donations. Garbacz faces five new charges of making and subscribing a false tax return. The indictment alleges the former priest failed to report as income the donations he stole from various parishes and failed to pay taxes on the stolen cash.

Garbacz earlier pleaded not guilty to 50 counts of wire fraud, money laundering and transporting stolen money between July 2012 and July 2018.

Garbacz is scheduled for an initial appearance in federal court in Rapid City on the new indictment July 29.
