Fire at SDSU research farm

The Brookings Fire Department extinguishes a fire at the South Dakota State University Research Farm on South Medary.

Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring says it was reported shortly before 5:00 o’clock Sunday morning. He says hay bales in a barn caught fire, likely combustion from internal heat and moisture in the bales.

The fire department was able to douse the flames but not before 30 hay bales were lost. They’re valued at about $3600. The amount of damage to the barn itself is not known at this time.

Brookings ambulance and SDSU police also responded.
