Driver escapes after car crashes into a Hamlin County lake

The driver escapes serious injury when their car crashes into a lake in Hamlin County.

Officers with the Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office and South Dakota Highway Patrol were called to this crash just before 8:00 o’clock Monday morning.

The driver was heading east on SD Highway 22 when the sun got into their eyes. The vehicle went into the south ditch about a mile east of Thomas. The driver over-corrected and the car went across the highway and into the north ditch. It hit the rocks on the lake’s edge and rolled, landing upside down in the water. The driver was able to get their seatbelt off and escape through the back door.

A passerby came across the crash and gave the driver a ride and contacted law enforcement.

The driver received minor injuries.
