Police say charges are pending against the owner of a dog that died in a hot vehicle in Brookings

Assistant Chief Derrick Powers says charges of animal neglect or mistreatment could be filed against the person who left the dog in the car Sunday afternoon when temperatures were in the 80s. He says the dog was dead by the time officers responded to a call about the animal.

Powers says it was one of at least four calls to police about animals left in vehicles in the last week.

He says if it’s 70 degrees outside, the temperature inside a vehicle with windows closed can hit 89 degrees in 10 minutes.
