Brookings Sheriff’s Department searches for suspect in knife attack

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Department is looking for a suspect wanted in connection with a knife attack that happened at a rural Elkton location.

Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring says they were called to the Brookings Hospital emergency room at about 10:40 p.m. Wednesday. A 23-year-old man had been slashed with a knife and was taken to the ER by a private party. He was treated and released.

Sebring says they’re looking for 23-year-old Arturo Mendez. He’s described as a slender, Hispanic male.

He’s possibly in a white Ford Explorer with Minnesota plates. He has ties to Brookings and Moody counties.

The victim and Mendez know each other and are coworkers at a dairy.
