The Brookings County Sheriff’s Department reports a couple of fires.
Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring says the Elkton Fire Department and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a garage fire in the 200 block of North Elk St. in Elkton at about 10:40 Tuesday morning. It’s believed that the fire started in the electrical box inside the garage.
There were several cars in the garage including a 1967 Dodge Charger, 1971 Plymouth Duster and a 1979 Dodge Colt. There were also a couple of motorcycles, various tools, and a stereo system.
There was also a pickup parked next to the garage that received extensive damage.
Everything in the garage was a complete loss.
A utility pole, wire and transformer owned by Ottertail Power Company received some $5,000 worth of damage.
The total amount lost in the fire is estimated at $124,000. The fire is under investigation by the Brookings County Sheriff’s office.
Also, the Volga Fire Dept., Brookings Ambulance, and Brookings County Sheriff’s Office responded to a grain dryer that was on fire at Ag First Farmers Coop in Volga. That was reported about 9:15 Monday night.
The fire was quickly extinguished and the only damage was to the grain dryer. The cause is believed to be an equipment malfunction.
