Brookings Man Wanted for Aggravated Assault

Local law enforcement is searching for a man alleged to have been involved in assault shortly after midnight Saturday on Main Street in Bushnell. According to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, 44-year old James Basham of Brookings had an altercation with 26-year old Derk Hartenhoff of White, SD. The Sheriff’s Office says Basham stabbed Hartenhoff in the face and shoulder, then fled the scene.

Hartenhoff was taken by ambulance to the Brookings Hospital. Law enforcement conducted an extensive search of the area, but did not locate Basham. K9 units and a law enforcement drone were also used in the search.

Arrest warrants have been issued for him for Aggravated Assault and Disorderly Conduct. The Sheriff’s Office advises people not to approach Basham, and rather contact the Sheriff’s Office right away.

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Brookings Police Department, South Dakota Highway Patrol, SDSU Police Department, Aurora Fire Department, and Brookings Ambulance all responded to the call.
