Brookings man facing felony charge after beating woman

A Brookings man is facing a felony charge after reportedly assaulting a woman.

Assistant Police Chief Derrick Powers says it was reported shortly after 2:00 o’clock Thursday afternoon at a residence on the 600 block of Seventh Avenue.

Powers says a woman was assaulted by a man she knew. During an argument, she told the man to leave. He refused and then attacked her, striking her several times and choking her at one point. It’s alleged he wouldn’t let her leave and prevented her from calling police until he left.

Police were initially unable to locate the suspect but the 29-year-old Brookings man was located this morning and arrested. He’s charged with aggravated assault, interfering with emergency communications and false imprisonment.
