A Brookings man is stabbed after entering a home and attacking the resident.

Brookings Assistant Police Chief Derrick Powers says they were called to the home on the 900 block of Fifth Street at about 2:00 o’clock Sunday morning.

The resident says he awoke to find the man in his home and he tried to get him to leave. The suspect attacked the resident from behind, trying to choke him. The resident grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed the suspect.

When police arrived, the resident was outside and the suspect was still in the home. He was taken by ambulance to the Brookings Hospital. After being treated, the 22-year-old was taken to jail.

He’s charged with first-degree burglary and aggravated assault. Powers says alcohol was a factor.
