A Brookings man is facing a felony assault charge after allegedly beating a woman during a Wednesday afternoon incident.

Assistant Police Chief Derrick Powers says police were called to the 700 block of Brooklawn Drive for a reported assault. They made contact with the victim and several other people at the scene. The suspect had fled.

The 35-year-old female victim says it started as a verbal argument and the man then struck her in the face and kicked her. The woman lost consciousness and the man reportedly continued to kick her and held a knife to her.

An ambulance was called to the scene and the woman was checked out. She was taken to the the hospital by private vehicle.

Police could not find the suspect but he later turned himself in. The 39-year-old Brookings man was arrested for aggravated assault and taken to jail.
