Brookings man accused of struggling with police and biting an officer

A Brookings man is arrested at a Brookings hotel after stealing items from his room and struggling with police.
Assistant Chief Derrick Powers says police were called to the hotel on the 2500 block of 6th Street at about 12:45 Thursday afternoon.
When police arrived, Powers says the man was uncooperative and it appeared he would try to run. The man struggled as he was handcuffed.
Officers found drug paraphernalia on the man and he was placed under arrest.
At one point, the man was able to move his cuffed hands to the front of his body and he continued to struggle, biting an officer in the leg.
The man was eventually secured and taken to jail.
The 36-year-old Brookings man is charged with petty theft, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and simple assault on a law enforcement officer.
