A box truck and its contents are extensively damaged in a Friday fire on Interstate 29.

It happened about 5:15 pm, north of Brookings at mile marker 147.

Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring says the operator and a passenger heard an odd noise while driving and pulled over to investigate. Once stopped, they saw fire under the truck and attempted to put it out with a fire extinguisher, but were unsuccessful.

The Brookings Fire Department responded to the scene and quickly extinguished the fire.

The damage to the truck and its contents is estimated at $57,000. The cause is not known at this time.

The Highway Patrol also responded.
