Bird flu spreading in South Dakota, confirmed in Minnesota

According to the USDA, the bird flu has been confirmed in seven South Dakota counties, including Kingsbury.  In has impacted more than 600,000 birds in commercial flocks of chickens and turkeys.

In Kingsbury County, that included of commercial flock of 124,000 layers and a turkey flock of 39,000 birds.

It has also been detected in Beadle, Charles Mix, Edmunds, Jerauld, Hanson and Hutchinson Counties. A number of them were confirmed last week.

Flocks where the flu have been confirmed are destroyed and the property is quarantined.

The bird flu has also now been confirmed in two poultry flocks in Minnesota. The state Board of Animal Health says the flocks are in Meeker and Mower counties.

Samples collected from both flocks were tested on March 25 and confirmed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture The state Board of Animal Health says it’s the first confirmed cases in the state. Minnesota officials have quarantined the properties and destroyed the flocks.
