Arrest made in Brookings counterfeiting case

Brookings police arrest a man for passing counterfeit $20 bills at a number of local businesses.

Over the past several weeks, Brookings Police and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Department have received reports of bogus bills.

Brookings Police Detective Adam Smith says, with the assistance of observant citizens, they were able to identify the suspect as 27-year-old Julian Huffman. He also has an arrest warrant for a federal probation violation for accessory to bank robbery in Nebraska.

On Monday, Huffman was seen leaving the residence on the 400 block of 15th Street South where he’d been staying. He fled on foot when approached by officers. Huffman was arrested a short time later and was in possession of methamphetamine and an altered check.

The US Secret Service was contacted and assisted with the investigation. Smith says Huffman admitted counterfeiting and passing approximately thirty $20 bills in Brookings and Volga. A search of the residence uncovered counterfeit money and manufacturing supplies.

Huffman was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of an altered check, and his outstanding warrant.

The US Secret Service will be presenting the case to the US Attorney’s office for federal charges of making and passing counterfeit bills. So far, officers have recovered twenty-eight counterfeit $20’s.
