Boy dies from injuries suffered in Highway 14 crash

A 6-year-old boy has died from injuries suffered in a two-vehicle crash that occurred Wednesday, March 7, three miles east of Brookings.

A westbound car driven by 27-year-old Shalimar Luciano of Aurora lost control on an icy U.S. Highway 14. The car slid across the center line into the eastbound lane and collided with a semi truck.

All three passengers in the car were injured. Six-year-old Ethan Rosa of Aurora, who sustained life-threatening injuries, died this past weekend in a Sioux Falls hospital. The other passenger, a 10-month-old male, also received life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized in Sioux Falls.

Luciano suffered serious non-life threatening injuries.

The 44-year-old male driver of the semi, Wesley Vortherms of Okabena, Minnesota, was not injured.

All those involved were wearing seatbelts.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
